Why You Should Be Lifting Weights...
Written by Caleb Laps on 8/16/19
You may already know that doing body weight exercises or lifting weights at the gym helps build muscle and makes you stronger, but do you know the effects strength training has on your mind and body? Many people do not include weight training in their daily workout routines because they are not aware of the benefits that go beyond building muscle.

There are many ways you can weight train. You can use either free weights such as barbells, dumbbells, and kettle bells or use machines designed to target specific muscle groups.

When done properly, weight training offers many important health benefits. It is considered one of the most effective ways to increase bone density and build muscle mass. Muscle provides support to your joints, which is crucial as you age and will help prevent injuries. Weight training also provides a boost to your metabolism. The more muscle mass you build, the more calories you burn - even when you're resting! Your body has to work harder to maintain muscle over fat.

Weight training at least 3 times a week has shown to reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke by 40% to 70%. Studies have also shown that weight training helps to improve insulin sensitivity. This means anyone who has type 2 diabetes should incorporate some strength exercises in their routine to help control their glucose levels.

While weight training provides many physical benefits, it also is beneficial for your mental well-being. A meta-analysis done in 2017 was able to prove weight training reduces anxiety levels. The instant change you feel in your body is similar to the one you would have after running. To some, this can be a powerful boost to one's self-image and motivation.

Many women fear lifting weights will result in their bodies becoming big and bulky. But this is not the case, lifting weights in combination with consuming sufficient amounts protein will only result in a fit and lean body.

As you can see, weight training provides your body with numerous health benefits.

Are you convinced you need a set of weights or some barbells at home? Before you start your strength training, you must understand there are also some dangers to weight training, especially if you're inexperienced. Using improper form or lifting techniques can result in injuries. You should always consult with your doctor before you begin any new exercise regimen.
